  1. McClellan was not the only one who believed Lee’s army was stronger than the army of the Potomac. According to a detailed study done by Col. John S. Clark of Nathaniel Banks’ corps in September 1862, the ANV entered Maryland with 97,175 men. All senior Federal leaders thought the ANV outnumbered Federal forces at the time. A subsequent reassessment in October 1862 put Confederate forces at just over 89K men. Just saying …
