Beard-O-Rama: Stuart vs. Schofield
In our first match-up, we have Confederate Maj. Gen. James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart (left) versus Federal Maj. Gen. John M. Schofield (right).
Remember, this is a bracket to determine the best Civil War beard, not a popularity contest about who was better. Cast your facial hair vote by typing in the name of the officer with the best beard in the comments section below. Feel free to defend your choice. You can also cast a vote on the ECW Facebook page.
Stuart
Got to go with Stuart. Schofield is giving a less groomed, hipster vibe, the guy who can’t shut up about his home brewed beer.
Stuart !
JEB Stuart
Stuart
JEB.
Stuart by a hair
Stuart
Jeb Stuart gets my vote!
Stuart
JEB. It has some style to it.
Stuart
JEB, by far. Schofield’s face looks as if it were attacked by a patch of lichen.
JEB, my vote. Bald guys should not have be beards. Looks like missed placed hair.
Stuart has a beard. The other guy just has not shaved in a while.
Schofield. Obviously even took the hair from top of his head to gussy up the beard.
My vote goes to Stuart. It actually enhances “Beauty’s’ looks. Scofield’s while impressively long does look scraggly with the wavy texture and the mustache is pretty weak.
Schofield for me. Longer beard and you can actually see that he does in fact have a mouth. Gave ole’ John Bell Hood a real bad day at Franklin as well.
Schofield could have used his beard as a bridge to get his troops across the Duck River when retreating from Columbia
I suppose it depends on your definition of “best”. Best as in I’d prefer to have the beard myself? Jeb all day. Best as in wackiest appearance? Then Schofield.
But if I’m voting for wacky, it’s got to be wackier than Schofield’s. I’ll take Jeb on this one.
Gotta go with J.E.B. Stuart; Schofield’s beard is actually kinda creepy!
Stuart. Luxuriant beard and hair frame his whole face and bring his eyes out. That “don’t mess with me” look. Schofield has no hair and the beard just kind of hangs there.
Stuart, hands down.
Scholfield’s looks like his hair has run down off of his head down to his chip
Stuart. Beard balances the hair. Schofield is overcompensating
Got to go with Jeb…fuller and frames his face better. It was said that his beard hid his “weak” chin.
Stuart has better eyes, but Schofield has the better beard by faaaar. That thing belongs in ZZ Top!
JEB Stuart by the hair of his chinny chin chin!
Stuart
Not a Facebooker but Stuart grew his beard to hide his beautiful face, so I don’t consider him all-in on having a beard, thus I vote Schofield.
Jeb Stuart
JEB Stuart. Easy choice here, this is a real 1 seed vs 16 seed scenario, sorry Schofield.
Pat, I fully agree with your characterization of this matchup as a 1 vs. 16 seed. However, as a University of Virginia alum (and basketball fan), I am bitterly reminded that sometimes, the 1 seed gets upset by the 16. Not this time, though.
Stuart and it’s not even close!
Stuart’s look much better. Schofield’s is just longer.
JEB Stuart has the best looking beard of these 2-well manicured and not out of control!
Schofield’s. I have always thought that Stuart’s beard looks like it is 2-3X the size of his head. It looks disproportionate, and in my humble opinion, ridiculous.
Stuart
Stuart.
It has to be Stuart, as he had a great head of hair as well, whereas Schofield was a charter member of the Hair Club for Men. Incidentally, Stuart did not need to grow a beard – he was incredibly handsome beneath that beard, hence his nickname at West Point: “Beauty.”
Stuart by a mile.
Incidentally, he grew the beard at West Point because “Beauty” was not intended to be a compliment.
