Beard-O-Rama: Augur vs. Crook

Today’s beard bracket pits Federal Maj. Gen. Christopher Columbus Augur (left) against Federal Maj. Gen. George R. Crook (right).

Remember, this is a bracket to determine the best Civil War beard, not a popularity contest about who was better. Cast your facial hair vote by typing in the name of the officer with the best beard in the comments section below. Feel free to defend your choice. 1. Yikes. They’re both pretty bad, but Augur’s is maybe less awful, so my vote goes to him, reluctantly.

  2. While they both look like they’re trying to touch their shoulder straps with the tips of their whiskers, Crook has the more luxuriant growth, so on sheer volume Crook wins.

  3. To me, it’s an unqualified tie. They both are very ugly and undignified. Not worthy of a leader of soldiers into battle.

  4. This is like being asked who is your favorite Menendez brother. Both choices are bad; however, Crook at least has more of an actual beard so I’ll go with Crook.

  5. I am disqualifying Augur from this competition … he doesn’t have a beard — just an extremely weird looking mustache … and i am not wild about his omni-directional hairdo either.

So, i am grudging voting for Crook, who is also distinctively odd looking …. both these GOs should have consulted the Army regulations before growing their “beards” … the grooming standards of the day stated beards should be short and neat … and there was probably another regulation proscribing ugly men from have strange looking facial hair!!!

  6. Crook. This match-up clearly demonstrates the difference between a beard and whiskers!!!!

  7. See my beard?
    Ain’t it weird?
    Don’t be sceered,
    Just a beard.
    George Carlin.

    Augur.
