Beard-O-Rama: Williams vs. Stevenson
Today’s match-up: Federal Maj. Gen. Alpheus Williams (left) versus Brig. Gen. John Dunlap Stevenson (right).
Remember, this is a bracket to determine the best Civil War beard, not a popularity contest about who was better. Cast your facial hair vote by typing in the name of the officer with the best beard in the comments section below. Feel free to defend your choice. You can also cast a vote on the ECW Facebook page.
Williams is much better, Stevenson has a strange walrus vibe going on with his mustache
Stevenson has an out of control mustache, not a beard, so Williams gets the W by default.
Like those points. Williams gets the nod. V.Tsao
Williams has my vote.
My vote goes to Williams. Much more interesting. And to think he named his horse “Plug Ugly.”
Very good, Brian, very good!
Stevenson
Williams’ beard is the wildest! He’s got my vote!
Initially I was going with Williams, on the grounds that he seems to have put more time into managing his growth, just to get it to stick out that way. But when Ann McGehee pointed out that “Stevenson has a strange walrus vibe going on with his mustache,” it reminded me of Andy Reid of the KC Chiefs. I like the former Eagles Coach and his walrus look, and on that utterly scientific basis, I cast my vote for the walrus – STEVENSON.
I’m with Stevenson and the G.K. Chesterton look!
Stevenson
My vote goes with Williams. Stevenson only has a mustache, no beard
Williams; A strong contender to win the whole thing outright!
If we don’t end up with the Alpheus Williams vs. Percy Wyndham match-up we deserve, this thing is rigged.
Williams, of course! You can’t defeat the famous “Trident” beard!
Stevenson.
The beards on Williams and Stevenson were dangerous! Surely they must be booted out of the contest – you could not get those beards near the moving parts of a rifle – or a steamboat, for that matter – or a tragedy could result. I speak with personal experience.
My girlfriend, while performing her obligatory military training for the Vietnamese army, one day wore an expensive silk scarf I gave her while on the rifle range, as it was so cold. After finishing one magazine in her AK-47 she inserted a fresh one, pulled back the bolt to charge the rifle, and just as she released it her scarf fell loose, right into its path. The bolt pulled the scarf several inches into the receiver, hopelessly jamming the rifle. It took her drill sergeant five minutes to clear the weapon, because for the first four and a half minutes he was laughing so hard he couldn’t work the bolt.

I know you’ve been waiting for this one, Evan.
General Williams, far and away!! He’s got it all going! The mustache, the goatee, the side burns!!! Style, panache, the total package!!!
Williams gets my nod.
Much ado about nothing
Williams
I have to go with Williams. He looks like he will stab you with his staches.
Fix! Fix! Fix! Fix! Fix! Fix! Williams.
Williams
Williams is my pick today!

Alpheus Williams wins over Walrus Boy/Chamberlain ‘stache-on-steroids.
