Beard-O-Rama: The Championship Match-Up!
This is it! March Madness has reached its peak–at least as far as Civil War beards go. The Ambrose Burnside Memorial Beard-O-Rama Bracket has reached the Championship Round!
Good leadership–and good beards–often rise up through the ranks. Our champions today are both colonels, proving that general officers don’t have monopolies on the best facial hair.
On the left: Col. Percy Wyndham of the 1st New Jersey Cavalry, who defeated Maj. Gen. Lafayette “Hagrid” McLaws with 58% of the vote in their Final Four round. Wyndham was an early favorite to reach the finals, and here he is!
On the right: Col. John Shackleford “Shack” Green of the 6th Virginia Volunteer Cavalry, who defeated Adm. David Dixon Porter with 59% of the vote in their Final Four Round. As one reader said in the previous round of voting, “Every tournament needs a Cinderella story, and this year that’s Green.”
Who has the better Civil War beard: Wyndham or Green?
Voting will go through Sunday afternoon, and we’ll announce the winner Sunday night!
Green. A real beard as opposed to a big goatee and a mustache.
Really torn here, Green has a legitimate beard, Wyndham’s is very stylish facial hair, will have to go with Sir Percy…mostly because if Green is facing you head on the waves aren’t visible and it just resembles a very long beard!!
I’m going with Wyndham! That kind of style takes daily planning, effort, and maintenance. Green’s only takes endurance.
I have to go with Green — no disrespect to Wyndham’s superb facial hair, but if we’re judging BEARDS, Green has him beat.
Green’s beard would not fit into Cinderella’s glass slipper, but Wyndham’s would, although the mustache would need the second slipper. So I have to go with Colonel Percy
Green
Green, because of length
Green
Sir Percy!!!
Yeah, yeah, a true Beard-O-Rama probably shouldn’t be won by Percy, per se, but this is March Madness, and wacky Wyndham gets my vote every time!
My vote goes for Green. Is this the type of election that they used to have in Chicago? Where the plea from Mayor Richard Daily was: “vote early and often?”
Have already voted- maybe the next version should be called March Hair Madness, so it covers any and all goatees, Van Dykes, sideburns, everything !
Agree 100%
Neither
Wyndham for the Win!
Shack Green has “the” beard.
Don’t forget to mention that this warfare of hirsutosity caused its own end; so many men were sacrificed to it that within 30 years, General Gillette and Sergeant Schick entered the fray and brought it to a close forever, razing it to the ground.
Wyndham is the real deal
Wyndham!
Green. Real beard!
Wyndham!
Green
Vote goes to Green, a real man’s beard no pretty-boy, prissy, waxed job.
Col. Percy Wyndham.
Tough choice, but since my own original nominee, JEB Stuart, went out early, I’ll go with Percy because he clearly has given thought – and care – to his entire facial package, rather than simply declining to shave. He should be rewarded for his effort.
This is a tough one! I’ve been voting for Percy all along, and really appreciate his stylish facial hair. On the other hand, it appears that Shack has not only grown a prodigious beard but the photo seems to indicate he tends it well. Since this was styled a Beard contest, I have to give my final vote to Shack Green.
Green
I’m going Green. (And thanks for doing this; it’s been fun!)
Wyndham
Wyndham
Green!
If it’s pure style points, then it’s Wyndham, but if the question is “best Civil War beard”, then it’s Green
Sir Percy.
Neither, Grant at Cold Harbor
Wyndham for the win. Style over “substance”.
Go to Green, though “Beauty” should have been here. Wyndham doesn’t have a beard, he has a flying buttress.
Green. Tradition over dandiness.
Wyndham
Wyndham gets my vote!
Sir Percy
Wyndham rides to victory!
I am not surprised that two cavalry dandies are in the final … i am going with Wyndham’s gravity defying ensemble of mustachio and goatee
Wyndham again and again and again!
