Are Civil War Beards for Losers?

I was surprised to learn this week that facial hair “is incompatible with the warrior ethos.” Obviously, someone missed ECW’s Ambrose Burnside Memorial Beard-O-Rama last March. In case you did, too, you can check out all the fun—and all the whiskers—right here.

I suppose that explains why Ulysses S. Grant shaved his early war beard and went from this:

Too bewhiskered to win!

to this:

The face of a winner! (Wait, there’s still a beard….)

Don’t be fooled! All those stars on his shoulders only make it look like Grant had a beard. Obviously, he can’t be a winner if he has a face full of whiskers.

I suppose now we know the real reason Robert E. Lee lost the war. Look!

The whiskers that lost the war

I’m just poking fun here because, obviously, beards have long been a source of amusement for us here at ECW—always have been and always will!

  1. Well maintained beards, like the behaviors, are absolutely a part of the warrior culture. Wild, uncontrolled beards, like the behaviors, are not a part of the warrior culture.

  2. The only beards currently allowed are deployed SF guys … so, if want to be a beardo, start doing your PT 🙂
