Hopkins House Update from Gettysburg: Renderings and Floorplans

Back in October, ECW shared news of a new effort by Gettysburg History to build an immersive, multi-media museum in town focusing on Black history. The museum will show off the Hopkins House, the last Black-owned home from the Civil War era. (See my interview with Executive Director Andrew Dalton about the project here.) (Take an exclusive look behind the scenes here.)

This past week, I was in Gettysburg, and I had the chance to check out the architect’s rendering of the new museum, as well as the floor plan. I thought I’d share a peek:

The plans are on display at the Adams County Historical Society’s Beyond the Battle Museum for anyone who’d like a closer look. And, as a bonus, you can see the Hopkins House in gingerbread-and-pretzel form:

Restoration is underway at the house site itself. The Hopkins’ original log cabin was buried under subsequent layers of construction, which is now all being carefully peeled away to reveal the original structure. Non-original portions of the building have been demolished, revealing interesting layers of post-war history.

We’ll keep you posted on future progress. In the meantime, for more information on the project or to make a financial contribution, visit Gettysburg History.
