Merry Christmas: “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day”

Back in 2011, ECW contributor Meg Groeling wrote about the beloved Christmas song “I Heard the Bells,” originally written as a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in the wake of the fighting at Mine Run in 1863. It is a longstanding tradition to re-share this article every year.

We invite you to take a moment to read her original post, and to fondly remember everything Meg contributed to the Emerging Civil War community.

Merry Christmas.

  1. Thanks for remembering and honoring Meg Groeling each year. I enjoyed rereading her original Christmas article. It reminded me of her great personality, her wonderful books and articles. Even her name, Meg, reminds me of the Civil War. I think of “Meg” March from the book, “Little Women”. Thanks again for a poignant reminder of our Meg!
