  1. I would like to acknowledge and correct an error I made in my interview with Chris. At one point I mentioned that Jackson said it was important to occupy northwestern Virginia “this year,” when in fact Jackson had said “this winter.” This quote was part of a letter from Jackson to J. P. Benjamin, Secretary of War, dated November 20, 1861. The actual sentence is, “I deem it of very great importance that Northwestern Virginia be occupied by Confederate troops this winter.” It is located in the OR (The War of the Rebellion: The Official Records of . . .), v. 5, p. 965.
