Savas Beatie Author Conclave, Day One: “Not Today Mickey, Not Today”

by Sarah Keeney

Lance told the story of Mickey Sullivan in the Railroad Cut. Mickey jumped into the railroad cut and a Rebel officer handed him a sword. He threw it at a ‘Big Rebel’ after being shot. After the injury, Mickey took a moment to figure out if he was ‘dead or speechless.’ Then, after taking a big swig of milk (maybe it was milk, we’ll never know!), a Reb helped Mickey up.

Years later, Mickey saw the flag the they captured on display with no mention of who captured it. He said, “Our gallant charge is forgotten by all, all except the families and mothers.”

Lance closed his presentation by saying, “Not today, Mickey, not today.”

“The Cut” is a pretty much ignored part of the battlefield, with the Wheat Field, Peach Orchard, Clump of Trees and all. I rediscovered “the cut” last time I was there. Spend around an hour walking down into it and around. Its a really neat part of the battle. There is always a part of the Gettysburg Battlefield to rediscover and reexamine. Plus,… I like trains. lol
