Picket Line

A couple weeks ago, I mentioned a new vineyard that occupies part of the ground that once served as the Wilderness field hospital along Rt. 3 near the border between Spotsylvania and Orange counties in central Virginia. My wife and I recently paid a visit.

The posts that hold up the newest grapevines run parallel with the crest of one of the rolling ridges that runs across the property. Silhouetted against the sky, they look barren, forlorn–the lonely survivors of some awful picket duty.
