Maj. Gen. Phil Kearny was killed 153 years ago today at the battle of Chantilly—the concluding engagement of the battle of Second Manasass. Originally buried in New York, he was moved to Arlington National Cemetery in 1912. The equestrian statue that marks his grave sits not far from the Old Amphitheater, the Tomb of the Civil War Unknowns, and Arlington House itself.

  1. I live in San Diego which has an area called Kearny Mesa, named for general Kearny from his pre civil war time in San Diego. Was that during Mexican war when California was annexed by Fremont ?
