  1. “I tremble for my country when I hear of confidence expressed in me. I know too well my weakness, that our only hope is in God.” – Robert E. Lee Robert E. Lee was a man of faith, humility, and honesty. These are qualities that are sadly lacking today.

  2. I thnk the name was John .dix and he was an official n the Buchanan administration. As a steamship was heading to a southern port (New Orleans?) there were rumors it would be attacked.

In a letter, Dix wrote “If any man tries to tear the flag down, shoot him on the spot.”

I like it bcausb just learned of it when I found a token with this printed on it and because it shows there was more backbone in the Buchanan administration than I thought. I just hope I remembered enough of the details.

  3. I like the statement of Robert E. Lee to his son Custis in a letter dated January 23, 1861 regarding secession. No more ironically patriotic statement was made by a participant.

“The framers of our Constitution never exhausted so much labor, wisdom, and forbearance in its formation, and surrounded it with so many guards and securities, if it were intended to be broken by every member of the Confederacy at will. It is intended for perpetual union, so expressed in the preamble, and for the establishment of a government (not a compact) which can only be dissolved by revolution, or by the consent of all the people in convention assembled.”
