Announcing the Fourth Annual Emerging Civil War Symposium at Stevenson Ridge

All of us at Emerging Civil War are proud to announce the speaker lineup for our Fourth Annual Emerging Civil War Symposium at Stevenson Ridge (August 4-6, 2017).

This year’s theme is “Great Defenses of the Civil War.

Our outstanding line-up of speakers includes:

Matt Atkinson (Ranger-Gettysburg National Military Park) the Confederate Defense of Vicksburg.

Chris Kolakowski (Director of General Douglas MacArthur Memorial) “I Will Die Right Here.” The Army of the Cumberland at Stones River.

Dr. Chris Mackowski (Co-Founder ECW) “Strike Them a Blow!” Lee’s Defense of the North Anna River.

Dr. Kelly Mezurek (Walsh University) an examination of the United States Colored Troops

Kevin Pawlak (Licensed Battlefield Guide at Antietam) will discuss the Confederate defense of the Bloody Lane at Antietam.

Ryan Quint (Ranger-Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park) will talk about the Lew Wallace’s Stand at Monocacy.

Daniel Welch (Ranger-Gettysburg National Military Park) will discuss Stonewall Jackson’s defense at Second Manassas.

Eric Wittenberg (Award Winning Civil War Author) will discuss John Buford at Gettysburg.

Lee White (Ranger-Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park) will talk about the Confederate defense of Kennesaw Mountain.

Keynote Speaker:

We are pleased to welcome our 2017 Keynote Speaker Dr. Brian Matthew Jordan. Dr. Jordan is an Assistant Professor of History at Sam Houston University. He holds a B.A. in History/Civil War Studies from Gettysburg College; an M.A. in History from Yale University; and a Ph.D. from Yale University. His book Marching Home: Union Veterans and Their Unending Civil War was a 2016 Pulitzer Prize Finalist in the History category. He is also the author of Unholy Sabbath: The Battle of South Mountain in History and Memory, September 14, 1862, which will be the topic of his keynote address.

Sunday’s Tour:

Our Sunday car caravan tour will cover the Battle of Brandy Station. Your tour leaders will be Eric J. Wittenberg and Daniel T. Davis. Eric and Dan are co-authors of Out Flew the Sabres: The Battle of Brandy Station, June 9, 1863.

Friday Evening Roundtable Discussion:

Emceed by Dr. Chris Mackowski-This years topics will include the changing tactics and technology of the Civil War, as well as other great defensive battles including Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor, Franklin, and more….
