  1. Thanks for a wonderful discussion of the Confederate Western Army generals. Chris Kolakowski mentioned Samuel Cooper as the Adjutant General and the highest ranking Southern General. I have often wondered why he did not command an army. Was he too old or was it his northern birth? Was he the Halleck of the South?
