Hal Holbrook, Former Lincoln Actor, Dies at 95
Hal Holbrook died today at the age of 95. Best known for his one-man show portraying Mark Twain, he’s familiar to many of us in the Civil War world for his portrayals of Abraham Lincoln. Holbrook played the 16th president twice, in North and South (1985, 1986) and Sandburg’s Lincoln (1974-76), for which he won an Emmy Award. Holbrook also appeared in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln (2012) as Preston Blair.
Here’s a quick little peek:
And here’s an interview from the Television Academy Foundation where Holbrook talks about playing Lincoln.
RIP Hal.
He also provoked one of the great lines of all tine in cinema – “A man’s got to know his limitations.”
And he provoked the line, “Your mouthwash ain’t making it.”
He always came across on screen as a nice man. Happy he lived so long.
Sorry to see him go.
