Erie County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial

The Erie County Soldiers and Sailors Memorial sits on the west side of Perry Square, at West 6th and Peach Streets, in downtown Erie, PA.

The sculpture, designed by Martin Milmore, is made from bronze, and sits upon a granite pedestal, and honors all the soldiers and sailors from Erie County who died while fighting to preserve the Union.

Completed in 1872, it was not officially dedicated until 1939, due to controversy over where to locate it.

There are monuments to those who fought in the rest of our nation’s wars in the area around this monument. A statue of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry sits on the far eastern end of the Square, at the intersection of East 6th and French Streets.

  1. thanks Terry …i enjoy these local CW monuments and often find them in the oddest places … i ran across one in Niagara Falls last week, actually within site of the falls … it’s a 50-ft tall obelisk with a soldier on top and names of the fallen on metal plaques at the bottom … the inscription at the base simply reads: Died for Their Country.
