Beard-O-Rama: The Elite Eight—Worden vs. McLaws
Rounding out our Elite Eight are the winners from our Thursday bracket: Admiral John L. Worden (left) of the USS Monitor versus Confederate Maj. Gen. Lafayette McLaws.
Worden earned 74% of the votes in his first-round victory over John Haskell King. Meanwhile, McLaws earned 65% of the votes in his first-round victory over David Stanley.
In first-round voting, one voter said McLaws looked like Hagrid from the Harry Potter movies. Meanwhile, another vote compared Worden to “the wizard character in the Lord of the Rings movie who had small animals in his beard” (Radagast the Brown). Which bearded wonder will pull off the magic in this round?
Remember, this is a bracket to determine the best Civil War beard, not a popularity contest about who was better. Cast your facial hair vote by typing in the name of the officer with the best beard in the comments section below. Feel free to defend your choice. You can also cast a vote on the ECW Facebook page.
McLaws
McLaws. Worden’s could be dangerous with machinery
Gonna have to go with Hagrid, er, McLaws again.
McLaws’ at least shows some degree of restraint!
Mclaws. It looks like he’s wearing a bearskin rug on his face.
Worsen. Both impressive but Worden gets points for style.
Mclaws
Gotta go with McLaws again for the way his full beard seamlessly blends with his curly hair.

McLaws gets my vote.
Don’t forget – I have nominated Lafayette McClaws to be named as the first-ever Teddy Bear – and he gets my vote.
McClaws has my vote
McLaws
McLaws wins this one.
Have to stick with Worden on this one.
McLaws
Even though I like Worden’s cleft in his bread, McLaws wins this round.
