A Civil War Reference by New Zealand
It is amazing where the Civil War pops up. I was reviewing something in the New Zealand official history of WWII, and found a reference to, and quote about, J.E. Johnston’s wounding. See the link below, and you’ll find it just after the marker for Page 153.
The next two paragraphs explain the work that needs to be done–on both sides–to build a good relationship between government and commanders in times of war.
My greatgrandfather, J. E. Brown, lived in Sydney, Australia, and then Christ Church, New Zealand, from 1852 to 1884, then returned to North Carolina. His two brothers, 14th North Carolina, died in Virginia in February and July, 1862. There are letters in NC Archives communicating those events and the progress of the War. Because New Zealand became a British province/territory, the forebears living there were British citizens and news of the War was kept current.
