Scenes from Civil War New York: An Introduction
Back in August, I had the chance to chat with ECW’s friend Jonathan White for the Emerging Civil War Podcast as part of our Cities of War series. Jonathan is a professor at Christopher Newport University and vice president of the Lincoln Forum. We spoke about his recent co-authored book with Timothy Orr, New York City in the Civil War. The book showcases the myriad ways in which New York contributed to, influenced, and was impacted by the Civil War. You can see that interview, below, from the ECW YouTube page or listen here.
New York City in the Civil War is part of Arcadia Press’s “Images of America” Series. Fans of the series know the volumes are each packed with pictures, sketches, photos, and images-aplenty. In the case of Jonathan’s and Timothy’s book, they had SO many images to work with that, inevitably, some of them ended up on the cutting room floor.
“Hey, I have an idea…” I said to Jonathan….
Starting next Friday morning and continuing weekly, ECW will feature some of the images Jonathan and Timothy wanted to include in the book but couldn’t. Think of the series, “Scenes from Civil War New York,” as an extended director’s cut of the book. You’ll get to see some scenes and meet some people not included in the book, but you’ll also get a taste of how cool the book itself is. Hopefully you’ll pick up a copy for yourself if you haven’t already.
I’m grateful to Jonathan and Timothy for sharing their great work with us here at ECW. They have a lot of little gems coming your way in the weeks ahead that are sure to surprise you.
