A Postscript to The Regimental Flag: Captain Joseph M. Barr

A postscript to a series about the regimental newspaper of the 2nd Delaware Infantry

Captain Joseph M. Barr, our intrepid editor of The Regimental Flag, survived the Civil War. Unfortunately, though, he wasn’t able to resume publication of the regimental newspaper. Shortly after the Second Delaware was transferred to the James Peninsula to join the Army of the Potomac, Barr contracted malaria, which lead to an incapacitating fever. He never recovered enough strength to return to front-line service and instead served the rest of the war as a guard at Camp Douglas in Chicago.

Barr died on July 10, 1876. His obituary appeared in The Middletown (DE) Transcript July 15, 1876, page 3, columns 2-3. It appears below.

I thank Capt Barr for his service to our country but also for keeping us entertained and informed in some way every Friday morning for these last six months.
