2019 ECW Symposium Keynote Speaker Announced!

During Emerging Civil War’s Fifth Annual Symposium this past August, we teased our keynote speaker for the 2019 Symposium. Today, we wanted to give you a little bit more information about this amazing opportunity to hear A. Wilson Greene on August 2, 2019 at the Sixth Annual Emerging Civil War Symposium.

Historian A. Wilson Greene

A. Wilson Greene is the former Executive Director of Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier located near Petersburg, Virginia. He previously  served as the first president of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites from 1990 to 1994. Mr. Greene has also spent time as a National Park Service historian at several parks, including Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park and Petersburg National Battlefield. He has also served on the presidential appointed board of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

A dedicated researcher and prolific writer, he has published more than 20 works on the Civil War. Two such works including Whatever You Resolve To Be: Essays on Stonewall Jackson and Petersburg, VA: 1861-1865: Confederate City in the Crucible of War. His most recent tome is the first of several volumes on the Petersburg campaign. Titled A Campaign of Giants: The Battle for Petersburg: Volume 1: From the Crossing of the James to the Crater, the study numbers an impressive 728 pages. It is being hailed as one of the most significant Civil War studies of 2018 and will stand as the definitive study of the battle for years to come. Students of the war and the Eastern theater should own this work!

As our keynote speaker for the 2019 Symposium, Mr. Greene will be speaking on his Petersburg book. He will be giving a presentation titled “The Capture of Petersburg Bids Fair to be Tedious: Grant’s Second Petersburg Offensive.” His talk will be examine several of the forgotten actions during the campaign.
