Clicked Off Another Birthday Without Incident
80 years ago today, Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr. celebrated his 58th (and ultimately last) birthday. “Clicked off another birthday without incident,” he noted in his diary. Buckner was the namesake son of Confederate Lieutenant General Simon Bolivar Buckner, and was killed 11 months later (June 18, 1945) leading Tenth Army on Okinawa.
This past Memorial Day, Buckner’s youngest son William offered thoughts and stories about his father and grandfather to KCTV. You can watch the interview here. Like his father and grandfather, William is a West Point graduate.
Thanks! A fitting tribute to a great man.
