Getting Ready for the Battle of Chickamauga
Chickamauga Creek, “The River of Death”Back in May, I roadtripped to Chickamauga National Battlefield to spend a few days with historian Lee White and take photos for his new book, Bushwhacking on a Grand Scale, part of the Emerging Civil War Series. Now with the sesquicentennial of the battle upon us, and with Bushwhacking newly released just in time for the anniversary, I want to share some of the photos I took with ECW readers.
One of the hallmarks of the ECWS that we’re really proud of is the photography—but, alas, the books are black and white, so some of the photos don’t get shown off quite to their full advantage. Over the next few days, in conjunction with real-time actions from the battle, I’ll post full-color versions of some of the photos we feature in the book as a way to commemorate those actions.
I’ll also draw from Lee’s text to provide a little context about each picture—but of course, we hope you’ll check out his excellent book to get the full story for yourselves!
