Merry Christmas from Uncle Billy

Major General William T. Sherman
Major General William T. Sherman

150 years ago today, following his march across Georgia, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman wrote the following note:

Savannah, Georgia, December 22, 1864

To His Excellency, President Lincoln, Washington, D.C.

I beg to present to you as a Christmas-gift, the city of Savannah, with one hundred and fifty heavy guns and plenty of ammunition, also about twenty-five thousand bales of cotton.

W.T. Sherman, Major-General

  1. Reading the new book “American General” by now-deceased John Eisenhower. Hope to find new perceptive about the man who was considered “no soldier” at West Point.
